What's Lamp?

Lamp is the name of a Japanese band. They were formed in 2000 by Taiyo Someya, Yusuke Nagai, and Kaori Sakakibara. They have released eight original studio albums to date.

Their sound is based on influences from Brazilian music and Western music from the 60s and 70s, but with their own unique sense of floating added to it. The band is unique in its elegant complexity and subtle simplicity.

In recent years, the band has gained a large number of listeners, mainly young people in the USA, Europe, South America and Asia, via subscription services (such as Spotify), YouTube, and social networking services, and has become a hot topic as a band with a high international reputation.

First Album You Should Listen to

"Lamp Genso" is their fourth album released in 2018.
With this album, Lamp have reached one extreme of their music career. Floating sounds, enveloping male and female vocals, and serenity.

Listen to "Hatachi no Koi," one of their representative songs.

Taiyo Someya's Twitter(X) told us how they made "Hatachi no Koi":

I wrote this song in 2001, the year after the formation of the band, with a strong awareness of Japanese sentiment, and wrote the lyrics with the image of a bossa nova crossed with a tanka poem. It was included in the first demo song collection I made using my hard disk MTR at the time.

"Lamp Genso" has another representative song you should listen to first, that is, "Yume Utsutsu."

"Yume Utsutsu" has gone viral on TikTok recently, and the beautiful melody and floating sound based on Bossa Nova caused their popularity overseas to skyrocket.

Ichiko Aoba

Lamp's "Yume Utsutsu" may remind you of Ichiko Aoba, especially in the floating sound.

Kirinji, Tomita Rabo

Lamp's second album "Koibito e" and the 7th one "Yume" may remind you of Kirinji and Tomita Rabo.

You may feel that they have something in common, especially in their songwriting style and complex melodies.

Haruomi Hosono

Legendary. Lamp of course must have been influenced by his wide variety of musical styles.

Next Listen: Bialystocks

Newcomers to the 2020s.
Like Lamp, they have a wide variety of musical styles, but have something that is unique to this band.
