The action comedy manga City Hunter, written and illustrated by Tsukasa Hojo in 1985, is becoming a live-action film in Japan for the first time. It has been adapted into a live-action film or a drama in France, Hong Kong, and South Korea before, with Philippe Lacheau, Jackie Chan, and Lee Min Ho in the leading roles. We are happy to see legendary crime fighter Ryo Saeba and his tomboy partner, Kaori Makimura, will be brought to life once again. This time, we will watch Ryohei Suzuki as Ryo and Misato Morita as Kaori. At the same time, we will watch Masanobu Ando in the role of Ryō Saeba's old partner and Kaori's brother, Hideyuki Makimura. Fumino Kimura will join the cast as the detective Saeko Nogami, who has a mysterious relationship with Ryo.

So far, in addition to live-action films and a TV drama, City Hunter has several adaptations, such as anime series, anime TV specials, anime films, a video game, and a musical. There are two spin-off manga series called Angel Heart and Kyō Kara City Hunter [Today from City Hunter]. The spin-off manga Angel Heart has a live-action Japanese TV drama and anime series, too.

Like the original story, the new live-action film is about Ryo Saeba and Kaori Makimura partnering after Kaori's brother and Ryo's old partner Hideyuki's death. They learn that a mysterious drug called Angel Dust is causing violent incidents in Shinjuku and the key to finding out the truth behind Hideyuki's death. The story will take place in modern Shinjuku, and we will see the famous XYZ-written message board at the east exit of Shinjuku Station once again, as in the original story. Thanks to the cooperation of the Shinjuku Ward Tourism Association, the filming of the upcoming film took place in Kabukicho [an entertainment district in Shinjuku] and the Shinjuku areas in Tokyo.

The new City Hunter live-action film will be released worldwide on Netflix on April 24, 2024, with a new version of the original anime ending theme song, Get Wild Continual.
