When we think about summer in Japan, watermelon, going to the beach, fireworks(Hanabi) festivals, wearing yukata, eating ice cream, enjoying outdoor sports, experiencing the peaceful countryside comes to our mind. Let's talk about some anime series that really capture the vibe of summer with their settings or characters.

1- Harukana Receive

This anime which is about beach volleyball is based on a manga series by Nyoijizai. The opening theme song is FLY two BLUE and the ending theme song is Wish me luck!!!.

The story is about a high school student, Haruka Ozora, who moves in with her grandmother and cousin, Kanata, in Okinawa. On her first day in Okinawa, some girls invite her to play beach volleyball. It turns out to be a competitive match due to her cousin's history with the girl they play with. She starts to help Kanata overcome her anxiety for volleyball which she used to love playing.





2- Grand Blue [Grand Blue Dreaming]

This anime which is about scuba diving is based on a famous comedy manga series written by Kenji Inoue and illustrated by Kimitake Yoshioka.

The opening theme song is Grand Blue by Shōnan no Kaze, and the ending theme song is Konpeki no al Fine by Izu no Kaze.

The story is about a college student named Iori Kitahara who moves to a flat above his uncle's scuba diving shop, Grand Blue, in Izu for his freshman year at the university.

Iori starts learning scuba diving and realizing his dreams but carefree members of the Diving Club often affect him.





3-Barakamon

This anime follows the story of a young calligrapher who is on a journey to find his own artistic style. It is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Satsuki Yoshino. The opening theme song is The LiBERTY by Fo'xTails, and the ending theme song is HIDE-AND-SEEK by Kenichi Suzumura.

Handa is a young short-tempered calligrapher. After punching a gallery curator, he is sent to Goto Islands by his father to work on his calligraphy. He becomes popular as Sensei and gets the attention of kids and teenagers in the town, especially a hyperactive kid named Naru.



4- Non Non Biyori

Non-Non Biyori anime which is based on a manga series by Atto, follows a group of children's daily life in a fictional small village called Asahigaoka. The small school in Asahigaoka has just five students, and they're all in different grades. Hotaru Ichijo, who is in the fifth grade, moves to the countryside from Tokyo and learns to adapt to this new lifestyle with her new friends.

Even though the anime takes place in different seasons, it mostly gives us a summer vibe which you should give a chance.





5-Dagashi Kashi

The anime which is about a traditional Japanese candy shop run by the Shikada family for nine generations in the countryside, is based on a manga series by Kotoyama.

The story revolves around Kokonotsu who wants to become a successful manga artist and does not want to inherit the family business despite his father's wishes. Hotaru Shidare, from sweets manufacturer Shidare Corporation, visits the shop to convince Yō Shikada to work for her family's company. He agrees to Hotaru's request only if she can persuade his son, Kokonotsu, to take over his family shop, Shikada Dagashi. Hotaru sets out on a quest to show Kokonotsu the joy of traditional Japanese candy.





6- Houkago Teibou Nisshi [Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater]

This fishing anime is based on the manga by Yasuyuki Kosaka. The opening theme song is SEA HORIZON and the ending theme song is Tsuri no Sekai e which were both performed by the main cast.

The story is about Hina Tsurugi who has just moved to her father's hometown with her family. By a misunderstanding, she meets an upperclassman named Yuuki Kuroiwa while taking a stroll at the seaside. Yuuki invites Hina to join her in fishing. During their fishing, Hina catches an octopus and panics since she isn't fond of bugs and some sea creatures, but this experience leads to her joining the school's Breakwater Club, where members catch and eat various seafood. Even though Hina doesn't want to go fishing at first, she ends up enjoying it and is excited about trying new things with her club friends.





7-Rilakkuma and Kaoru [Rilakkuma to Kaoru-san]

This stop-motion anime television series is based on the Rilakkuma character franchise.

The story is about Rilakkuma, a soft toy bear that lives with a young woman named Kaoru, Kaoru's pet bird Kiiroitori, and a small white bear named Korilakkuma. They mostly like to spend their days relaxing and eating their favorite foods.
