Once upon a time, in the not-so-far-away past, I was really interested in visual novels, especially otome games. And when I noticed they also have anime versions, I decided to share them with you.

What is an Otome Game?

First of all, Let’s talk about what an otome game is. These story-based games target a female audience. These romantic stories are usually in visual novels or dating sim format. The player takes a female role and chooses a route. Each route could represent a different male character or an otome game could have different endings with the choices you make as the story continues.

Anime Based On Otome Games

1- CODE: REALIZE

I must admit that the Code: Realize series is one of my favorite otome games. This game is in a steampunk world. I love the character’s outfit and world design. And the story also is fun to play. Especially Code: Realize - Future Blessing which contains less drama, and more romance.

At least once in our lives, we could feel like an outcast who has a hard time fitting into our surroundings and might think about finding a unique prince who could show us our ability is special so that we can feel like a princess or heroine rather than an incompatible person. Anyway, it is hard to express how I feel about this game without giving spoilers so you should at least give the anime version a chance.

Code: Realize is about Cardia. She has a deadly poison in her body that can melt anything but needs that to continue living. She can’t touch anyone without hurting people. His scientist father abandoned her in their house and she has waited for him ever since. Because of an incident, people who know her, call her a monster. One day Royal Guards come to her house but before they capture Cardia, the handsome thief Arsene Lupin and genius engineer Impey Barbicane capture her and take her to Count Saint-Germain’s house. Well, we meet two- three more interesting characters in her journey and the story becomes very complicated since nobody is innocent and everyone has a secret or two. But interestingly enough, Cardia also meets Queen Victoria! Along the way, Cardia meets Vampire Delly, Vampire Hunter Abraham Van Helsing, Brilliant Scientist Victor Frankenstein, and private detective Herlock Sholmès. There is one more vampire in this group, can you guess who he is? Well enough spoilers, so you should find out by yourself.

Mia Regina performed the opening theme song "Kalmia", and the ending theme song "Twinkle" was performed by Saori Hayami in the anime series.

2- HAKUOKİ

This otome game takes place in the 1860s. The young female character is surrounded by Shinsengumi who are an elite group of samurai in that era. This story also contains fantasy elements and it takes place in Kyoto. Chizuru, who is searching for her father(who is a doctor), comes across with shinsengumi. At first, they think she is a male. After a while, they learn who she is, so her journey takes a new turn. In her journey, she finds out about both her demonic past and Shinsengumi’s mysterious secrets and develops a romantic bond with them. There are several seasons of anime series and a few anime movies made by this otome game.

3- COLLAR X MALİCE

This otome game is about a rookie police officer named Ichika Hoshino who works in the Special Regions Crime Prevention Office. She is attacked on her way home from work and finds herself with a poisonous collar on her neck. It is an experiment of a terrorist group called Adonis. They want to find out if she is worthy to join the group or not. To make matters worse, Ichika is forced to investigate the X-Day Incident, which is done by Adonis in Shinjuku, together with five mysterious ex-police officers. Two parts of anime movies are made by this game and it is released in 2023. The theme song is "Ningen × Shikkaku by Kizu.

4- UTA NO PRİNCE

Four-season anime series and two movies are made from this award-winning otome game series. The story is about Haruka Nanami who is trying to become a composer and whose dream is to write songs for her favorite idol. She enters the Saotome Academy which has a strict rule about no romance in the school. The students who graduate from there become idols or music producers. She meets six students, who are all competing to become idols.

For her graduation project, as a producer candidate, she needs to team up with another student who wants to become an idol. If they become successful, they will join the Shining Agency after graduation.

5- OZMAFİA

This fantasy otome game resembles the Wizard of Oz. Could it be because of the name of the game or the introduction of “a girl, her pet dog, and three companions made a journey to meet a great wizard who could grant their wishes?” Our heroine finds herself in a foreign land without any memories. A mafia family named Oz takes her under their wings. The town is like a war zone except on Sundays. In this interesting town, she has to figure out who to trust, who to love, and who to avoid without any memories from her past.
